The Morning Scrum for June 20, 2013

There have been some great games in the Stanley Cup Final but no one could have seen an offensive outburst coming in Game Four. The Blackhawks played at a faster pace against the Bruins and it resulted in six goals but it also ended up with them surrendering five. Will Joel Quenneville demand a more conservative approach in Game Five or is this the way that Chicago has to play if they want to beat the Bruins? As impressive as it was that the Blackhawks could score six goals against the stout Bruins defense, it was also impressive that the Bruins kept punching back. The Hawks went up 4-2 late in the second period but two goals from Patrice Bergeron got the Bruins back in the game. After Patrick Sharp finally scored Chicago’s first powerplay goal of the series midway through the third period, it took less than a minute for Johnny Boychuk to tie the game again for the Bruins. Sudden death overtime would be the only thing that could prevent the Bruins from answering back once more as Brent Seabrook ended the game at the 9:51 mark. Dennis Seidenberg attempted to block Seabrook’s shot, as he normally does, but ended up missing and the puck beat a screened Tuukka Rask for the winner. The Cup Final is now tied at 2-2 going back to Chicago on Saturday night.

On October 22, 1967, the expansion Los Angeles Kings went into Chicago and upset the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks were coming off a season where they finished 1st in the NHL with 94 points (a 17 point edge over the second place Canadiens) and iced such legendary players as Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, and Pierre Pilote while the top players for the expansion Kings were Eddie Joyal, Bill “Cowboy” Flett, and Bill White. The biggest name for the Kings was 37-year-old goaltender Terry Sawchuk. Sawchuk split time with Wayne Rutledge that year but the Kings started him for the first time in this game. Sawchuk was coming off winning the Stanley Cup with the Toronto Maple Leafs but was left unprotected in the Expansion Draft. Sawchuk played 36 games with the Kings in ’67-68, moved on to Detroit and New York, before passing away following the 1969-70 season.  This particular game would be one of Sawchuk’s last great performances as the Kings were outshot 20-3 in the third period but came away with a 5-3 win. In total, Sawchuk turned away 39 of 42 Blackhawks shots in the win.

Player of the Night: Jimmy Howard, Detroit Red Wings. The Wings goaltender needed to be their best player in the first and third periods when his team was badly outshot by the Blackhawks and he was. Howard kept the Wings in it long enough for them to score two quick goals in the second period. After that he stood up to the pressure of the Hawks in the third period to backstop his Red Wings to an unlikely 2-1 series lead. Continue reading The Morning Scrum for May 21, 2013
